Sucuraj - Island Hvar, Dalmatia

Sucuraj the most important port on the eastern side of the island Hvar, named after the small church that there already existed 1331st. In the sixteenth century, Sucuraj was inhabited by the Augustinians who erected the monastery, the present rectory. Sucuraj gets new arise by the the arrival of refugees from Primorje at the beginning of the Candian War. Makarska's Bishop Bartul Kacic Zarkovic chosen Sucuraj as their destination and built his residence at the mid-seventeenth century. Baroque fort st. George (1613) monitored the Dubrovnik Neretva channel and territory, but was partially destroyed by the Italian Fascists during World War II. Population is engaged in agriculture, fishing and tourism. West of the town, on the northern coast of Hvar, there are numerous bays with beautiful sandy beaches. Sucuraj is connected to the mainland by ferry on the route Sucuraj-Drvenik which takes place every day. Sucuraj from all the villages on island Hvar is closest to the mainland, and due to beautiful bays and beaches presents one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island Hvar.
