Jelsa - Island Hvar

Jelsa is a small town located in the beautiful bay on the north coast of the island Hvar. Population deals with olive oil, viticulture, tourism, shipping and fishing. The most notable building in Jelsa is the church of St. Fabian and Sebastian, which has received its present shape in the sixteenth century. The first center was gradually developed around the Baroque church of St. John. Church of the polygonal shaped architecture is decorated like a stone monstrance, on the picturesque town square around which Renaissance and Baroque houses of Jelsa's seamen are preserved. In the place of the current park in Jelsa, there was a swamp which was drained in 19th century and turned into one of the most beautiful parks in Dalmatia.

Jelsa  is connected with Split and Bol on the island by a ferry line, and nearby Jelsa there are Vrboska (3 km) and Stari Grad (8 km). Beautiful sandy beaches, thick pine forests, olive groves and tall poplars give Jelsa and its surroundings a special charm and irresistible attraction. Tourism started to develop in early twenties, after the construction of hotel Jadran, so Jelsa is one of the originators of tourism not only on the island of Hvar, but also on the Croatian coast. Jelsa is a small town with a rich tourist offer and an important tourist center of the island Hvar and Dalmatia, its guests offers a variety of accommodation - hotels, apartments, camp sites and a rich gastronomy. It is a square tower composed of massive "cyclopean" blocks long and more than 2 m, on a narrow plateau of the earlier Illyrian ruins, south of Jelsa, which monitors the entire island Brac-Hvar area - from the island Solta on the west to the Makarska Riviera on the east.
