Scedro island
Scedro Island is located on the south side of the island Hvar, with two relatively well-protected deep harbors. The vegetation on the island are covered with pine forests and underbrush. Coast Scedro stretches numerous bays and beaches, some of which are known - Lovišće Mostir on the north side that serve as anchorage for ships. The Latin name for the island Scedro was Tauris. In a channel between Scedro and Hvar, 47 BC. Kr. famous battle between Caesar and Pompey's fleet took place. According to the Statute from 1331 the island was under the municipal authority reserved for common use of pasture. It was believed that this grape thrives better and lasts because of rose and the country has long been under the trees. Especially beautiful is the pine forest on the eastern side. Island quarry is still clearly visible and travertine mine was used for building the Baroque chapel in the cathedral.
